Watching the all-inclusive market evolve over the years, is like watching two shopkeepers on opposite city corners constantly one-upping the other.  Only, this is with celebrity chefs, multi-million dollar pools, and sprawling, luxurious, property upgrades.  While the majority of resort features are part of the all-inclusive fees you have paid, management companies are always looking for ways to iterate (and bring in incremental tourism profit).  That’s not to say these are resort “traps” - in fact, sometimes just the opposite.

Club Level

Every all-inclusive will offer levels or categories of room and service, ranging from premium views, private resort access, to upgraded toiletries and top-shelf liquors.  You can read more about this in THE RESORT section, and should be aware that both at booking and upon arrival these options will be provided to you.  If you plan on being a frequent all-inclusive vacationer, upgrading to club level and committing to a family of resorts may be a good idea, but you should experience  a few different properties before you decide.  Club level comes with additional perks, but also comes at a cost - we’d recommend saving your money

Day Trips

All-inclusive resorts can be located in some of the most beautiful places on earth, and staying exclusively on-premise means missing out on local / regional offerings.  There may be historic towns, or monuments, amazing reefs for snorkeling / scuba, and natural landscapes or experiences you won’t find anywhere else. Be aware that each activity or excursion you select means less time inside the pre-paid all-inclusive experience, and you’ll be exposed to additional costs for travel, food, and souvenirs.  If you are an active traveller or crave sightseeing, this may be well worth the price and we advise you to read the PACKING section to ensure you are prepared.

Wine & Spirits

Even if you keep a fully-stocked bar at home, you will impressed with the variety of wine, liquor, and cocktail ingredients available at an all-inclusive.  While we don’t advise over-consumption, the inclusion of expensive beverages as a part of your resort expense is something you should take advantage of.  At dinner time, or if you’ve elected for a VIP experience, you may be shown a wine-list or top-shelf liquor selection with additional prices -  the choice is yours, but remember you have already paid for some amazing selections.  Don’t be embarrassed to ask for house red or white wine (even Champagne), and to enquire what choices come at an additional cost.

Resort Credits

All-inclusives offer a vast array of luxurious treatments at world-class spas, restaurants,  and health centers.  There are often additional exclusives, like a chef-tasting menu, romantic beachside dinner, private gazebos, or a dedicated photographer that can be purchased to elevate your vacation status. Offered individually at the resort, or as part of packages upon booking, some of these perks may be available to you as a guest, and some may come at additional expense.  Be aware that a 30% spa credit, will entice you to spend hundreds of incremental dollars at the spa, and increase your vacation budget you may not have planned for. That said, it’s up to you and your wallet - all-inclusives offer some amazing additional programs and services.

Resort excursions are not only unique, they are a great way to promote family bonding and shared experiences (not to mention releasing some energy). Activities, and group tours can be a fun way to gain exposure to new cultures.

Survival Guide: Kids
Survival Guide: Romance

All-inclusives cater to the honeymoon lifestyle.  Even if you have been married for decades, take the time (and splurge a little) to find something private, romantic, and memorable.

Survival Guide: Pro Tips

If you do opt for an excursion or activity, be mindful of transportation options. Renting a Jeep, or hiring a taxi may be more expensive than group vans or busses - but the privacy and freedom to explore increase your time to take in local sights.
