Vacations are supposed to be fun, and planning isn’t usually associated with fun.  We’re not talking about creating spreadsheets, or timed calculations, but all-inclusives provide so much to do, we’ve found vacationers were never aware of resort features they already paid for!  Vacation days are expensive (especially at an all-inclusive) so we recommend learning about resort amenities before the trip and discussing your priorities. You don’t have to do everything, but either as an individual, a family, or as a couple - take ownership in shaping your time!

Newsletters:

Each day, resorts offer a rotating schedule of events, activities, and amenities as part of the all-inclusive lifestyle. These are usually printed as newsletters delivered the evening before, or the morning of  the corresponding daily options.  If your resort is very small or secluded, you will find a bulletin board, or screen with similar information. Not only do they feature the weather and beach conditions, but also group outings, special events, property updates, daily news, recommendations, and key contact information.  Read them!  A ten-minute discussion about your day’s plan will ensure you get the most return from your all-inclusive investment.

Day-Parts

With so much to do (or not do) all-inclusives provide vacationers with options to tailor their days in whatever way they see fit.  However, like any vacation, time is limited.  We’ve found that breaking up the day’s into smaller parts are helpful to navigate the resort’s many amenities - and applying portions of a day to things like exercise, relaxing, excursions, romance, or fine-dining. As you will see in our FOOD & DRINK section, much of the operations of an all-inclusive are centered around classic breakfast, lunch, and dinner timeframes.  Because of this, we’ve adopted a schedule around the area’s in-between times.  Waking up, prior to breakfast, post breakfast, the gap until lunch, post lunch, the afternoon, how late we want to eat dinner, and post-dinner plans. Its simple really, but just a little planning and day-parting can maximize your trip. Its up to you if you pack in those day-parts, or just spend the whole time at the pool!

Special Events

Another great feature of all-inclusives is a focus on presenting local traditions, regional hospitality, and bringing to life the “theme” of the resort.  Depending on the size of your resort, there may be extravagant theatrical productions, group dance displays, or a simple historical / locally-themed dinner.   We strongly recommend attending these events, and paying attention to the dailies around what and where special events may be hosted.  Other events may be social activities at the pool, the beach, or property grounds - ranging everywhere from archery lessons, tennis, yoga, scuba-diving, snorkeling, beach-sports, or zen meditation. You can find something for everyone - or opt-out of it all.

Pacing

This is called the all-inclusive survival guide for a reason.  With so much access to unlimited food, drink and fun - we have seen some disasters.  Remember an early Halloween where you overate all your candy and were sick for a week? Or the time you drank seven tequilas  at University and couldn’t talk or stand up straight? Or the time in Florida you got 3rd degree sunburn and spent the entire vacation in-doors?  Remember those times now.  Surviving and all-inclusive means practicing moderation in an environment of excess.  Just because you can order three chicken quesadillas at 10:30am, or drink a bottle of wine before dinner doesn’t mean you should. When you are returning home, take a look at the travelers around you at the airport - they all spent about the same amount of money, but ~50% look happy, and ~50% look miserable. I wonder why?

Know when supervised recreation, movies, or playtime is available - you’ve already paid for it, and it gives the adults an opportunity for some well deserved alone time.

Be sure to schedule a few special events as a couple, whether it’s a late morning breakfast-in-bed, or sunset dinner on the beach, think-ahead and ask your concierge.

Survival Guide: Pro Tips

Explore! It’s easy to get stuck visiting the same pool or restaurant, and we encourage vacationers to move throughout the grounds day and night to find unique spaces, amenities, and preferred (often private) spots.
